Getting students to engage with unassesssed online activities
Need to make it clear how the activity links to the learning outcomes and assessment.
Use surveys within the VLE for students to feedback to the tutor on the use of new technologies or their learning experience.
The use of online activities can be separated from L&T and needs to be integral and viewed as integral.
Interaction betwen the taught material and technology could be using on-line post-its for feedback.
Essential it is integrated and not a bolt-on - it is an expected part of the learning experience.
Carrot and stick approach - you need to fill in 3 discussions as part of the assessment/for your assessment to be marked - require a minimum.
.. Challenge Card 2 Striking a good balance between F2F and TEL. Action learning sets - get these working f2f first of all, then move to technology eg collaborative wiki.
Example given in putting the materials on-line then having a f2f discussion - this could encourage engagement with the materials and lead to deep level learning.
Recordings and podcasts so the students can go back and reflect - develop an exercise around this so the TEL aspect is supporting and enhancing and leading to deeper level of learning.
As confidence grows the balance may change between F2F and TEL.
